We were very sad to lose Lawrence earlier this year. He was a very popular artist in the gallery and will be much missed.
A percentage of the sales of these paintings will go to the British Heart Foundation.
Lawrence was a Member of the Oxford Art Society, Faringdon Art Society and Lechlade Art Society. He was also a former member of the Fosseway Artists and a past Chairman of the Stanford Art Group. A self-taught artist, Lawrence lived in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire. After a career in engineering management, he was able to take early retirement in 1999 to concentrate on his painting. Having worked for many years in watercolour, he worked predominantly in acrylics. Although still retaining a largely traditional style, he enjoyed exploring the many techniques and varied effects achievable with the medium.
A prime interest was always landscapes, particularly that of the woods and hills he loved to walk in. He had a particular fascination for capturing transient atmospherics and the subtle effects of light in the British countryside, seeking to transport the viewer to the time and place that inspired the work. His art frequently sought to provide a peaceful and tranquil antidote to everyday stresses. Works have exhibited and sold widely in the Thames Valley and the Cotswold, through private sales, society exhibitions, galleries, solo and selected artist exhibitions.
